What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is one of the most common diseases in America. Both children and adults commonly get it and it can be very serious. Most Americans will experience some form of gum disease in their lifetimes, and while mild gum disease may not present serious symptoms, left unchecked, it can cause real problems for your teeth. Gum disease can lead to early tooth loss if not properly addressed.

In this article, we will go over the different types of gum disease as well as the ways to prevent it, and how dental visits can help treat it.

Types of Gum Disease

There are two common types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is one of the most common diseases in America and can lead to periodontitis if left untreated. Both forms of gum disease begin because of bacteria in your mouth leading to infection. Gingivitis is generally reversible if the proper treatments and dental care are employed. However, periodontitis can lead to irreversible damage to your teeth and mouth.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gingivitis Symptoms

Plaque buildup around the gums can lead to swelling and puffiness. This is an early warning sign of gum disease. Gums swell due to the early signs of infection.

If you notice blood when flossing or brushing your teeth that happens frequently, this is a sign of gum disease. While it is possible for gums to bleed from brushing to hard, usually bleeding gums are a sign of gingivitis. You should see a dentist if your gums are consistently bleeding when you brush and floss.

If you notice that your gums are receding away from your teeth, this is a sign of gingivitis or other gum disease. Gums begin to recede when they get infected. Over time this can lead to worse infection which could to tooth loss.

Periodontitis Symptoms

One of the common signs of periodontitis is when your adult teeth begin to wiggle or feel lose. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss over time and wiggling teeth are a sign that your teeth are getting infected.

Sensitivity in the teeth can be caused by a few different dental issues. However, one issue that does cause tooth sensitivity is gum disease. If you notice increased sensitivity in your teeth or pain, you should call a dentist and make an appointment.

If you begin to feel pain or discomfort when chewing foods, this could be a sign that you have periodontitis or another gum disease. Pain or discomfort when chewing is often a sign that the tooth itself is becoming damaged.

How To Prevent Gum Disease:

Gum disease, like cavities or other dental issues, is something you can prevent. Proper brushing and flossing habits combined with regular visits to your dentist can go a long way in preventing gum disease. It’s important to note that gingivitis is considered to be reversible, so if you notice the symptoms of gingivitis you should make an appointment with your dentist right away.
